First of all, Dawntrail was so fucking fun, and by saying that I don't mean that all the other expansions weren't fun. SHB is my #1 ffxiv expansion and my favorite video game story of all time, but I wouldn't describe playing that as fun. I would describe it more as making my chest ache with joy, and crying a lot. I also think it wouldn't be fair to even compare Dawntrail to the 2 that came before since from both the talk from the devs and actually playing it myself a story like SHB and EW was clearly not what they were trying to do (and wouldn't be possible imo, SHB and EW took 4 expansions and a decade of story development to get to be that good).
Dawntrail felt like an actual adventure, the closest thing that comes to making me feel the same way was playing through ARR for the first time. That's mainly what I went in with expectation wise also, just a polished ARR, and they more than delivered. Although the beginning is kinda slow (that mat be more because I was doing every side quest along the way) once you get to the first trial it just keeps going up and up and up until the end.
Speaking of duties, they were all super fun and fucking beautiful, and that's not just because of the graphical update. There's a reveal in the third dungeon that literally made me gasp out loud. All the areas and cities are fucking beautiful as well and huge, way bigger than any other area in all the other expansions. The sense of scale definitely lends itself to the sense of adventure as well. One small thing that I was really surprised by was the inclusion of pueblos in the wild west area. I have literally never seen them depicted in any media, video game or otherwise, so it was a breath of fresh air. The music is also fucking amazing as always, nothing but bangers.
As for the story itself, I would put it second behind SHB and maybe EW, although that may just be because of the recency bias. I loved the themes of legacy, culture, and what being family means. The last scene with Erenville and his mother made me cry, ok, ill admit it. Overall Dawntrail was good, but not the best, and I personally really enjoyed it, the things they set up also got me speculating on 8.0 which probably isn't a good idea considering how far out we are from it.
